Let Me In

by Aura Marsh

you drench me in it—

this never-ending affection.

I’m in awe: this was it,

what I’d been missing.

the warmth—I remember it now.

I want more.

I run back, barefoot,

through shards of glass,

across crusted blisters,

just to taste a sip.

hoping that if I show my grit,

my will,

or the tears still dried

along my lips,

you’ll let me in.

but there I am again,

waiting outside the door

you so proudly slammed shut.
